The difference between trigger point massage and classic massage

Forskjellen mellom triggerpunktmassasje og klassisk massasje

Many people think that all massage is the same – that it’s all about rubbing and kneading muscles until they relax. But trigger point massage and classic massage are two very different approaches with different goals, techniques and uses. Here’s what you should know.

Classic massage – holistic and relaxing

Classical massage, also called Swedish massage, is the most well-known form of massage. It uses long, flowing strokes, kneading, and rhythmic movements over large muscle groups. The goal is to:

Classic massage is excellent for stress reduction, post-workout recovery, and general well-being.

Trigger point massage – targeted and therapeutic

Trigger point massage is a clinical approach that targets specific sources of pain in the muscle tissue. Instead of long strokes, the practitioner uses precise, sustained pressure on identified trigger points . The goal is to:

  • Loosening specific muscle knots
  • Eliminate referred pain (radiating pain)
  • Restore normal muscle function
  • Treating chronic pain conditions

The treatment can feel intense and at times uncomfortable – but that's precisely because it works directly on the problem.

When should you choose what?

Choose classic massage when you want relaxation, stress reduction or general recovery after a busy period or training week.

Choose trigger point massage when you have specific pain, chronic tension, headaches, limited mobility, or pain that radiates to other areas of the body.

The combination often gives the best results

At Triggerpunkt Studio, we like to combine both approaches in the same treatment. We start with classic techniques to warm up the tissue and calm the nervous system – and then move on to targeted trigger point work where needed. Book a treatment with us and experience the difference for yourself.
