Chronic stress and muscle tension – what really happens in the body?

Most people know that stress can cause stiff shoulders or a sore neck. But fewer know why – and what actually happens inside the muscles when the body lives under constant pressure. Here's the explanation.

Muscles that never get rest

When the body experiences stress, the brain sends signals via the sympathetic nervous system to prepare the muscles for action. Muscle fibers contract – a natural part of the fight-or-flight response.

During short-term stress, this is not a problem. The body tenses up, deals with the situation, and then relaxes. But when the stress is chronic, the muscles remain in a state of partial contraction – hour after hour, day after day. Read more about how stress settles in the body .

Trigger points – when the muscle gets stuck

Over time, persistent muscle tension can lead to the formation of trigger points – small, hyperirritable knots in muscle tissue. These occur when muscle fibers are unable to fully relax and become stuck in a mini-cramp.

Trigger points can:

  • Cause local pain and tenderness
  • Radiate pain to other areas (referred pain)
  • Limit mobility and flexibility
  • Lead to headaches, fatigue and reduced sleep quality

Reduced blood circulation and accumulation of waste products

Tight muscles also constrict the blood vessels in the area. This means that the muscle receives less oxygen and nutrients – and that waste products such as lactic acid are not transported away effectively. This contributes to the characteristic aching, heavy feeling many people experience in the neck, shoulders and back.

A vicious circle

The worst part is that tension and pain are themselves stressful for the body – which in turn activates the stress response and keeps the muscles tense. The body is stuck in a vicious cycle where stress creates tension, and tension creates more stress.

Breaking this cycle requires active intervention – and this is where professional massage plays a crucial role. Read about how massage can help the body break out of the stress response .
